Remember that map pack for Socom 3 that was announced back in February? As far as I can tell, Sony missed their March release window, and it is getting released just now. On June 27th the SOCOM 3 Map Pack #1 was made available for download directly to the Playstation 2. It was not detailed whether users can download the map pack to an alternate storage device (such as a USB memory stick or memory card). The Map Pack will cost you $5.99, and goes on sale on July 12th. From now until July 11th you can download the maps free of charge to try them out. However after this time period you will be required to pay $5.99 in order to continue using them.

What is on the SOCOM 3 Map Pack #1? Socom II maps of course. The very same maps included on the Playstation Magazine disc. These maps will only work with Socom 3. So you are basically paying $5.99 for already available maps that were supposed to be free for Socom II.

Further background on SOCOM 3 Map Pack #1:

Contains the classic SOCOM II HDD levels After Hours, Liberation and Last Bastion.

  • After Hours is an urban map inspired by the Korean city of Seoul and is playable with up to 16 players in Suppression, Demolition and Control gametypes in a day or night setting.
  • Liberation is based on a North African seaside city. It is playable with up to 16 players in Suppression, Demolition, Control and Escort gametypes in a day or night setting.
  • Last Bastion is set in rural Albania at the ruins of a riverside castle. It is playable with up to 16 players in Suppression, Extraction, Breach and Control gametypes in day or night setting.
