Hey everyone. Well I finally ordered my Asian PS2, I should have it within a couple of days. I also have various shooters for it, so i'm thinking of getting an arcade stick. Please recommended arcade sticks which you have used and which you like.

Thanks.

What do you need an Arcade Stick on a shooter for? but it also depends what kind of shooter are you talking about! for example: Contra Shattered Soldier, NEO Contra, and Army Men Green Rouge(Arcade shooters)! and if it's like Ninja Assult, Time Crisis, and Resident Evil Dead Aim(the ones you use a GunCon for). so which type of Shooters are you talking about?

He is talking about vertical / horizontal arcade shooters, aka shmups. Games like Gradius V, Ibara, Raiden III, Mushihimesama, Homura, etc etc.

X, I recommend getting a Hori Arcade stick like these, but none of them are in stock right now at play-asia:

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-m-49-en-70-4ra.html
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-m-49-en-70-10up.html
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-m-49-en-70-26m.html

The ones you want to avoid are sticks like this:
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-m-49-en-70-11si.html
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-m-49-en-70-4dx.html

They have the big oval sticks instead of the ball sticks and are often wierd and cheap. Go with the HORI sticks for quality arcade parts.

There is also this stick which may be good:
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-m-49-en-70-2byy.html

I don't know. Its new, and has had zero reviews or feedback on the forums I have searched. This stick looks the part, but could be crap quality. Buy at your own risk.

I recommend checking out ebay, and maybe dropping the big cash on an HRAP2 (Hori Arcade Pro 2). It will run you over 100.00 but the arcade stick is well worth it. You are going to want arcade quality. I should also point out that once you start playing shmups with an arcade stick you never go back. Playing them with a stick is the way to play.

Thats not for playing sideways Smile For Raiden III on PS2 you would set your PS2 on its side and then turn on the vertical ratio in order to play it as it would be played in arcades.

There are 3 types of shooters:

1.) Horizontal
2.) Vertical
3.) Vertical (standard ratio)

Horizontal shooters are games like Gradius V or R-Type that play on a display in their native screen ratio.

Vertical shooters are those that would display on a TV with a vertical letterbox. In order to play them in their true form you would need to invert your TV / Monitor on its side, and then set the games display to the Tate option as long as it is available.

Some vertical shooters are designed not for a vertical elongated display ratio, but for a normal screen. Meaning the same resolution as say a Gradius game but vertical gameplay. One example of such a game would be the MileStone shooter "Chaos Field".

Thank you for the advice Smile

I have found this one on sale http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-m-49-en-70-4ra.html for £35 (new). Is that a good price for this stick?

Thanks.

Yes that is actually the arcade stick I would recommend getting since it is a bit cheaper than the HRAP2. The major problem is that it isn't widely available. So I would jump on ordering that stick while you still can.

I ordered this stick for my brother a while back and can vouch for its quality. Great arcade stick.

Is it possible in any way to use PC peripherals on a PS2? Dunno if there is any kind of adaptor that does that or even any decent arcade sticks for PC's. If there is however they may be cheaper? PC stuff normally is.

You can't use a PC arcade stick on a PS2. Though you can the other way around. You can use a PS2 arcade stick on a PC using an adaptor.

I am telling you right now, do not be cheap when it comes to buying an arcade stick. It just isn't worth it. You will buy some cheapo arcade stick that you barely ever use, not fully appreciating how much a real arcade stick can change your gaming experience. If you go cheap, you will own a piece of hardware that you played for 10 minutes when you originally got it, but it won't be something you use regularly.

Go with a HORI stick. Save your money and invest wisely.

Wasent trying to be cheap just l9ooking at cheaper options. What about use of DC sticks on PS2? or any sticks for that matter Xbox whatever. I guess the question shouldent be whats the best arcade stick for PS2 but whats the best arcade stick I can use on a ps2.

Well there is an xbox to PS2 convertor, so I guess if you can get your hands on an original HORI Fighting Stick EX stick for the xbox for cheap (if that is even possible), then you could do that. However I do not recommend doing this. Buying an Xbox to PS2 adaptor will easily run you over 20.00 after shipping. Even then you will be limited to just using that arcade stick on 2 systems. (Note: There are no adaptors for 360/PS3 arcade sticks to previous gen consoles.)

See the whole point of buying a PS1 / PS2 arcade stick is that you can use it on pretty much any game console because they make adaptors for PS2 to EVERYTHING. Sure buying all of the adaptors over time can start to add up cost wise, but its worth it having 1 arcade stick that you can use across ALL platforms.

I am not trying to insult anyone by pre-emptively assuming they would try and be a cheapskate about getting an arcade stick, but it is true that everyone will try and save money when they get the chance. If you don't know anything about arcade sticks, and have not tried them out for yourself with various games you could find yourself in the position of owning a hunk of junk.

What you want is the japanese arcade standard, which is a small ball stick, close to the buttons. Do not get a "drumstick" design, which has the big beefy stick. Those things are like grabbing a fat ladies leg while you are playing. A ball stick is the way to go.

Another alternative, though a rare one, is this NAMCO PS1 stick. It is very good, great for modding, and you might... might... beable to find one at some local shop at a decent price. Though this is fleamarket type material here folks. Most likely going to find this on ebay, and these do go for decent money online as they are sought after by arcade stick modders:

If you guys want I can add another reply here with a list of all of the acceptable arcade sticks that you could purchase.

X: Do not despair, for Super UFO has the Hori Fighting Stick 2 in stock: http://www.superufo.com/product_html/Playstation_2_Hori_Fighting_Stick_2.html

I need to buy one myself, though I am currently focused on trying to get an older game console off eBay. I also heard that Super UFO's shipping to the UK can be costly, though this might be your only option.
