Blast , it's true, you can go out and (in my country anyway) pick up a used PS2 for around $50 for a large model, or around $70 for a slim. These prices will admittedly fall a bit if the redesign launches at $99.

But, some people want a new system.

What you're saying is kind of like asking someone why they went out and bought a new TV when they could just buy an old one used for a lower price. The reliability of a new system beats getting a used one that was owned by someone you don't know, when you have no idea how well they took care of it. You get a higher price tag, but you also get a brand new, clean system (possibly in your choice of colors), plus a year long warranty.

On a side note, it will have the latest firmware (including the latest DVD player driver) which is nice for owners of the older models like me who don't want to use up almost a meg and a half on the memory card just to get a full featureset out of the DVD player menu.
