Is there anyone that can tell me what I need to do to get PS2 set up to play online. Is there anything that I have to buy to do this, I don't recall any disc coming with the PS2 to get me set up. Do I need to contact my internet co? I'm fairly new to this stuff, my husband is the game playing, but I would like to get online to be able to play against others Question Please let me know.
Thanks, Dawn

Where can I purchase this ethernet card and cable that is needed to do this? I know I sound pretty ignorant, but I am when it comes to stuff like this. It's the linking the ps2 to the pc that has got me. I just don't understand how it is done.
Thanks again. Exclamation

First let us know some information about how your home network is setup:

  • Are you on broadband internet? or dialup?
  • What operating system are you running on your PC?
  • Do you own a router? (This is a device that lets you connect multiple PC's to use the internet at the same time.)
  • Do you own an older model PS2? or the newer slim model PS2?

An internet startup disc is not required, as many online games have network config tools on the game disc.

Hi,
Thank you for getting back with me, I'm on dial up, Windows XP is the system I have, I don't have a router, and it is a Slim PS2.

Ethernet cards and cables can be purchased at various computer and electronics stores, both online and offline. MonoPrice was recently recommended to me. However, I haven't bought anything from it yet, so I can't verify its reliability, or the quality of the products it sells. You need to get two cat5, cat5e, or cat6 network cables, and a router.

Alternatively, you could get a crossover cable, in which case you wouldn't need a router. (It's listed at the bottom of the page on ethernet cables: http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=105&cp_id=10208) This route is cheaper, and easier. Just connect one end of the cable to the playstation 2, and the other end to the PC's ethernet port.

Something else worth noting is when your computer is made. I'm not sure whether or not I'm talking down to you by asking a question like this this, but you said you're not very knowledgable about these things, so I'll ask: do you know what an ethernet port looks like? It's the port on the back of the slim line PS2 that looks like a wide telephone jack socket. (Not the one with the red light coming out, that's the optical port.) If you're computer is running Windows Xp, I'm guessing it's relatively new, and thus probably has an ethernet port built in, even if you've never used it. Search for a port on the back of your computer that looks like the one on the back of the PS2. (It'll probably be near the edge.)

If you don't, you'll have to buy a network adapter. The first two listed on this link are for desktops, the next two are for laptops: http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=105&cp_id=10501 Or look for a USB to ethernet adapter: http://computers.search.ebay.com/usb-ethernet_Computers-Networking_W0QQ_trksidZm37QQfromZR40QQsacatZ 58058
