Are the Kerotan frogs littered throughout the game a reference to a Sanrio character? The design looked familar, but I couldn't put my finger on it.

The Kerotan Frogs are not based on the Sanrio Character "Keroppi". Apparently there are actual figures just like the Kerotan that are widely sold in Japan. Though I am not sure what their purpose is or their popularity.

I did some digging and came across this.

Apparently the Kerotan line is Konami-branded merchandise aimed at children along with a duck named Ga-Ko. All sorts of hygiene/bathroom items bearing Kerotan's likeness, such as soap dispensers, towel hangers, toothbrush kits, etc. are sold in Japan. I was also able to find books based on Kerotan as well. I wonder if Konami manufactures a regular plastic Kerotan doll? I would be interested in placing one on my desk.
