TheMytho and I will be posting games that run at 60fps on the Playstation 2. I am still not sure whether to include games that do NOT run at 60fps in order to track what games have/have not been tested. That list could become enormous.

Confirmed to run at 60fps:

  • Armored Core 3
  • Armored Core 3 Silent Line
  • Crimson Sea 2
  • Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty
  • Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance
  • Nightshade
  • Outrun 2 SP (JPN)
  • Rez
  • Ridge Racer V
  • Sega AGES 2500 Series Vol. 31: Virtual On Cybertroopers
  • Shinobi
  • Virtua Fighter 4
  • Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution
  • Virtual On Marz
  • Timesplitters 2
  • Twisted Metal Black
  • Twisted Metal Black Online

60fps 98% of the time
(arrays of missiles, explosions, or busy sequences can cause these games to hitch a bit)

  • Armored Core 2
  • Armored Core 2 Another Age
  • Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2
  • Outrun 2006 (US)
  • Warhammer 40k FireWarrior
  • Wipeout Fusion

So what does tribes run at?

Does mortal kombat armageddon really run that fast? I had problems with that game on racing before, with the fps speed.

Well, take into consideration what TribesAA is trying to do. Its rendering scenes with almost infinite draw distance across very large maps. The number of rendered polygons in a scene heavily impacts framerate, and the longer the draw distance, the more polygons that are rendered.

The game definatly has a framerate limiter imposed, due to the fact that indoor areas have the same framerate as outdoor areas. If the limiter was removed, and a variable framerate was possible, as soon as you aim outwards into the distance the framerate would drastically dip from 60fps onwards down to around 35-40fps or so.

TribesAA's framerate is consistant even under extreme conditions. Mortars, grenades, hunters flags, mines, and the turrets/sensors all over the place don't bring the framerate down at all. Tribes never chunks up or dips with all that is going on in the game. TribesAA brings open terrain competative gameplay in the form of one of PC's golden age classic FPS's to the PS2 in great form, which I think is a huge technology accomplishment, even if the game doesn't run at 60fps.

God of War II runs at a good framerate on PS2 hardware for what it is trying to do, and is not framerate limited. However it does not run at a consistant 55-60fps, but at far less than that during much of the gameplay.

See this video for accurate framerate data: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogzfcYWsjoI
