I've read that RE: Outbreak has insanely long loading times if you don't have the HDD. I'm wondering if anyone who has played it can comment on this.

The game definitely looks like a lot of fun (especially online), but spending an extra $100 on the HDD (in addition to $50 or so for the game) seems like a bit much. It's fine for people who are already committed to Final Fantasy XI, but for everyone else... You can buy a lot of other game stuff for $150.

Can anyone offer some impressions on Outbreak's playability without the HDD?

Apparently it can use the HDD to pre-load information about levels (and maybe more). It is my understanding that the HDD is used by RE: Outbreak solely to improve loading times (but I could be wrong).

Loading times vary from person to person. Some people have very short ones while others have horendous load times. I'm guessing it has osmehting to do with the version of your PS2 since the margins are so great but who knows. If you were going to get the HDD already, great but if not then don't buy it just for improved loading times.
