For example, in ATV Offroad Fury 2, you can set the PS2 up to be an iLink host or client. I figure, what would happen if one tried to do this on a non-iLinked PS2 (the new 50001 model)? I'm betting the system would just not recognize any iLink connection, but that'd be because there was no port to begin with.

I think I might've answered my own question. Nevermind.

Yea hehe no i.link port, then can't play i.link games. Which is a real bitch because now you can't go buy a brand new i.link system, you have to buy an old used POS.

Yea you just need to get a specific cable. This one:
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-n-70-vh.html

It has 2 small port connectors on it. Standard firewire cables have a small and a larger end. So they wouldn't work. Click on the link above and you'll be able to click on the image and get a close up of the connectors.

Also I checked the best site on the net for gaming cables, and they have then in stock for $5.95 each.

JANDAMANS! http://www.jandaman.com/games.mvc?p=ps2linkcable&Category_code=PS2

I ordered my Saturn S-Video cable from them. Great service.
