Community: Somehow I don't think the platform differences will become much of an issue. I think what platform you are playing on will be jsut like playing online via broadband along side a 56k gamer. Many people have been around the bend a few times with this concept. 4x4 Evo, NFSU, FFXI...So Console vs PC gameplay seems like it is branching out and people are getting used to the idea. (Console vs Console online gameplay is another story alltogether, see the RPG forum for a discussion on FFXI and PS2 vs 360 gameplay)

Cheating:
I personally think Sonic Team is asking for a world of hurt here. Does anyone know how well Blue Burst has been running lately? It seems once you mix PC and Console realms, with one of the most NOTORIOUSLY hacked game franchises ever, your toying with disaster. Sonic Team has never been devoted to eradicating cheating. Only just enough to suppress cheating to the point so their legit subscribers would stick with it. Actually this can barely be said, as scene hackers have made patches in both the past and recently to block malicious attacks. It is pretty much inexcusable that Sonic Team has never solved the cheating dillema.

as for the console versions of Phantasy Star, its very hard to patch a console version to eliminate Hacking (or as its called in PSO, Duping). this is do to the lack of space on a single Memory Card for all the new data.

on the other hand, games such as D2 and WoW are computer games and are patched quite regularly (in there life span) and still see SOME hacking.

i guess my point is, if you want a hack free envirement, dont play online... now with that being said, i hope that sonic team has learned from the past and present and makes PSU much like FFXI in that the PC and PS2 gamers play and enjoy the game as if there on the same platform. and i would pay as much as i do for WoW (14.95) to see that happen

I'm just hoping they will make a game that is much harder to hack. PSOBB has had it's fair share of hacker scares (nothing BIG yet, just some name coloring and changing of one's model to that of the GMs... oh, and the disapearence of Cronus:1 ( = Vega:1) the other day...) already, but there's nothing really BAD going on. Some hackers, such as one by the name of "snowfox" say they can do all sorts of crazy things, but all they can really do is client side hacks that will end up reverting back to normal after they log off. For example: They can change a monomate or whatever into an Elysion, but it will become a monotmate when they log off next.

Sure, it may not seem like ST is trying, but this snowfox kid has been banned so many times it's not funny. I'm just glad they're banning him! He seems to keep getting ahold of friends' accounts or something though... He really is quite sad, paying money to hack a game that he keeps getting banned from...

From what I've seen though, nothing has really bad has happened yet. The hackers are just immature script kiddies that can't do anything in the long run.

But yea, back to what I was gonna say. PSO is so hacked because the engine has been around for at least five years or so. It's the same engine each and every time! PSU is a brand new game, though, so if there are exploits, they won't be found easily because no one else is familiar with the game and how it works.

Edit: As for how the cross-platform stuff will affect it, I'm sure there will be some bots or such on the PC end of things, but the PS2 end should be safe. A bot, in essence, is a script that will do one thing over and over. For example, in FFXI there are "Fishing Bots" that will keep doing the fish command/macro over and over and over again. There are also gil sellers that camp notorious monsters with bots that will automatically claim the monster before any real player even has a chance too. It's not an epidemic, though, and most FFXI players are legit. I expect PSU may have similar bot issues, but it won't become wide spread, and it'll most likely be a PC only thing. PSU will most likely go through DNAS (just as the PS2 FFXI does) to prevent any such cheating.

DNAS doesn't really stop cheating. To be honest, I can go onto every DNAS enabled game with a GameShark and get past it. From what I've heard, it only detects mod chips and whatnot.

Meh. Think about it, though. There is no cheating on FFXI on the PS2 end. It's all on the PC end. And even then, it's petty little stuff like fish bots, windowers (FFXI doesn't normally allow one to play windowed), log readers, etc. Of course, we have no idea how Sonic Team will write this game, so it could easily contain a lot of exploits... And given the fact that it seems people are dedicated to hacking the Phantasy Star Online games kinda makes ya think they'll try their hardest on PSU...

Well, to be honest, I'm more worried about how the PC players will treat the console players. FFXI had alot of jerks from the PC side when it first came out on the Ps2.

...While we doubt there was ever any question on the matter, SEGA has confirmed that PS2 and PC owners will be able to play together. This includes moving around and conversing in the same lobby and even joining up for adventures. The PS2 version, of course, does not require the hard disk, as security updates and patches will be stored on a memory card...

It looks like cross-platform play is a go. I am personally very happy that Sega decided to go this route, since 1. My PC is pretty screwed up right now, 2. I prefer to play PSO on the consoles and 3. I'll be able to play with all my friends who are getting PSU for PC.
