what do you get if you cross cart racing with twisted metal black and a bit of burnout the answer: jak x combat racing.

indeed this combat/racing game that i must say is a very nice suprise. its an arcade type of racing game there is no sim here. you dont have to like jak series or have played the other jak games to like this game its a new game with the jak series theme.

what makes this game stand out from other cart/combat games is the amazing amount of game modes and options you are given.

game modes:

circuit race

turbo dash

freeze rally

death race

rush hour

time trial

death match

sport hunt

capture

artifact race

assasin

all these modes are available offline and online. and they can be tweaked online when you host.

online options:

you get buddy list, full stat tracking, ability to search for server. full clan support(yes full clan support), hosting options. 6 players online, headset and keyboard support, private messages. 2 players online option as well.

one amazing thing which is really cool any points you get online you can use offline, which means you can use points that you get online to upgrade and customize youre car, unlock videos, characters, new cars, cheats, a bunch of other goodies. what makes this soo cool is that you get points just for partipating in games you dont necassarily have to win you will still get points and can use those points when ever you want. so basically for playing online you get rewarded and can actually use youre rewards. this is something i think future games should use.

as you play offline you will get new cars which you can fully cuztomize and take them online. and whats soo cool is that chosing and switching cars and characters online is very simple and fast.

Gameplay:

if you ever played a cart racing game you know what to expect. in races you race around the track picking up weapons and trying to win the race and take other racers out. you have youre boost, secondary weopons and so on. the other game modes offer a ton variety from basic car combat(like twisted metal) to hunt for items, special type races, theres lots of variety not just racing. the controls are easy to use and very responsive.

all these gamemodes are fully cuztomizable online. so you can tweak each game to youre liking. if you dont have online there is also a lan option.

oh but heres the real kicker all this is done with nearly no load times, yes thats right no loading. i say nearly beacause its about 1 second when you see the loading thing but thats about it. this is true for both offline and online, near seamless integration to one screen to the next.

the graphics and sound are very nice and detailed. nothing spectacular but very good. if you decide to go through the whole single player experience you will get about 45 mins of cinema as well to tell a very fleshed out story.

if you like cart racing games this is probly the best cart game out there right now. if you like racing in general it does offer plenty of that and then some.

i personally was very suprised how good this game is and how much stuff is in there, im not a huge racing fan but i really do like this game just for the sheer amount of options and modes and some very cool extras.

look for me in game: chicagodave.

There has been a real shortage of non-realistic online games lately. When I say non-realistic, I mean games that arn't designed to mimic real world things. Games like Rainbow Six, Socom, Ford vs Chevy, Battlefield, WWE Smackdown vs RAW, etc...etc... are all games that have graphics, and in-game objects that are all designed to model real life things. Things like trees, cars, guns, and people. In-fact if you go down the list....MOST of all the online games are like this. There are so few online games that feature a unique original concept that has nothing to do with real life stuff.

This is why Jak X, to me, is very desirable. When I do buy another PS2 online game, Jak X is the one I will be getting. I want more games that have brand new creative stuff in them. New worlds that are not based off of real-life.

I think I am most interested in the combat racing with this game, rather than the deathmatch-esque components that are included as extra features. I get that enough in other games I own, especially twisted metal black online. Since I like that game so much, playing jak's DM based modes would leave me half satisified I guess you could say. So the big thing that interests me is the racing and the combat WHILE racing, much in the same veign of other futuristic racing games like wipeout and extreme g. Even though they are in another spectrum (very fast futuristic racers), they do have attacks used during races. So this is the biggest draw for me when it comes to jak x.

One of the other big selling points to me is the fact that it has LAN and splitscreen online. This means you can have 2 PS2's in a LAN environment and have 4 people playing...2 on each PS2.

The clan support, customization, headset support, and buddy lists all seem like icing on the cake.

I just have one question, does this game have keyboard support and lobby chat? I personally prefer keyboard chat over headset chat. It lets you have a much more involved discussion.

This game looks like a real winner, and thanks for re-confirming the LAN support as well. I had tracked it down in a few reviews, but its nice to get that real confirmation.

Not sure when I will be able to acquire Jak X, as I have atleast 40-50 other games that I have slated above this game at the moment. As Jak X is a new release, I have to slate it lower on my immediate needs list as it is currently mass market and there is a large quantity of merchandise available. I have to put my efforts towards other games that are a lot rarer and harder to find first. My to buy list is all sorted by need to own, and availability.

there is keyboard support but no actual lobby to chat in but theres an option to send a message to all the players who are in the same room as you. i havent tried that yet since i use the headset, which is not that bad is open mic but remember its only 6 players and so far its pretty good. also want to note on the price its retailed at $40 and for some reason i got it for $35 apparently theres some promotion goin around i asked at eb its also $35. i really hope more people get this game its way fun and unfortunately right now not too many people online.

Hmmm ok word I will leave the KB support as a question mark until I am able to actually test it to gauge whether or not it should be slated as having KB chat support or not, as sending messages is sort of like a gray area. Inbetween kb chat support and no kb chat support hehe. Still digging that feature though, sounds usefull.

So its open mic? SO far the only game where open mic has worked well, from my experience is Splinter Cell. ALl other games the open mic turns into a bit of a mess. I think the walky talky, press and say / wait your turn method works best. Ghost Recon Jungle Storm is probobly the game I own that has the best headset support. It works so awsome.

So far has the communication via headset worked ok in Jak?

Ahhh very nice. I guess I could get it a lot sooner than expected then. Maybe late december / early january Smile

yea it works fine you see whose talkin on screen so if they get too anoying you can always mute them. also i think you should put keyboard support as yes, since you can actually use it in game. whether its limited to just messages its still functional.

Currently the Online Game List covers the KB function for games with an open lobby for chatting whether its a public lobby or one inside a hosted game match, or chatting in-game. Sending messages is another situation. I would need to see first hand exactly how it functions in order to assess how I treat that function. I may or may not have to make an alteration to the list to start reflecting "keyboard support" vs "keyboard chat". It is a judgement call. I can't let someone else make that judgement call for me. I really gotta check that out for myself to decide how this function in Jak X gets managed on the Online Game List.

or maybe just saying something like "keyboard option" but if you put no keyboard support then maybe someone wont bother to plug it in when they go input their log info or when they want to send messages. well regardless on the back of the box it actually does say keyboard support and in the manual also, so i guess its not a big deal people should figure it out.

Like I already stated I have no idea what I am going to do yet about the option. I havn't said yes or no whether it would be added to the list with the KB option lit up. Its going to be left as a question mark until I am able to actually look at it.

The North American section of the Online Game List alone comprises 3157 lines of hand written code.

I have to be careful about how I approach this stuff. The list is based on standards.

If I make something like "keyboard option", like using KO or KS for this, and KC for keyboard chat...that means I have to go back through ALL 144 PS2 online games and change them from no KB to ?'s simply because we would then be tracking keyboard support, as well as chat.

That is a rediculious amount of work. If I make the wrong decision, or do something I'm not happy with, then it ends up as wasted time. So to avoid making a grave mistake and wasting valuable free time, I would much rather play it smart and see it first hand, and then decide where I am going to go from there.
