What can I do if I have a router and a PS2?

Well, it's sort of hard to answer that question, because it's so broad.

You can play multiplayer games that feature network play through it, by connecting multiple PS2 consoles with Network adapters to its' ports.

If you have a modem of some kind, and your router has an "internet," port, you can connect them, and extend this capability to allow online play, on titles that are still online. I'm not sure what else you're lookking for.

I remember reading threads talking about playing LAN over the Internet using a router, can you help me with this?

You are referring to the practice of tunnelling. Some LAN games can do this, when a computer connected to the internet with the same router is running an appropriate program (GIT, or Xlink Kai.) Check these sites for more info: http://playstation2.onlineconsoles.com/phpBB2/guides_ts2_tunnel.php www.teamxlink.co.uk/ . The programs do port-forwarding, or something, to use the computer as a bridge to carry LAN data between two remote PS2s running the LAN mode of a compatible game.
