Do not know if this has been mentioned before here, but early copies of Jak X: Combat Racing had a problem where their auto save feature could freeze up and potentially corrupt the data on your memory card. Nosferatu and Noonothat both picked up copies of the game where this happened. Not all non greatest hits versions of the game have the error, as I do not think my version is greatest hits and it does not have this error. This is fixed in the greatest hits version so if you want to avoid dealing with the glitch you should try to get the greatest hits version of the game.
( I have read that the greatest hits version has the problem fixed on many online forums, here is 2 examples http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/driving/jakx/show_msgs.php?topic_id=m-1-41999721&pid=927166 and http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=927166&topic=48149725 ) There is also a way to get around the glitch though. If you load up your game then take out the memory card so it cannot auto save you can avoid the problem. You then just reinsert the memory card to do a manual save, then take it out again. Here is more info from a wikipedia article. "Autosave Memory Card glitch Early copies of Jak X contained a programming glitch that can potentially affect a PlayStation 2 Memory Card. The first symptom of the glitch occurs sometimes after a race, during which the Autosave feature will continue to blink for a much longer duration than usual,or when you go to the garage before the race begins. Sometimes the game will no longer load and must be reset, while at other times the game will continue to run as normal. This glitch can potentially corrupt the Jak X save data, causing the game to no longer recognize the data at all. In some extreme cases, the entire memory card can be completely corrupted, or be filled up with space that cannot be deleted or written to. The only solution is to delete the data in the PS2 System Browser and restart the game from scratch. A workaround is to take out the memory card out after the game has successfully loaded and continue to play as usual, as the autosave cannot function without a memory card inserted into the system. When players need to save their game, they can return to the menu, replace the memory card, and save Jak X manually. The memory card should then be removed once the save process is complete if continued play is desired. In the second week of April 2007, an e-mail[2] was sent out from Caley Roberts, an associate producer at SCEA, to several users who had written to Naughty Dog about this issue, confirming that they have fixed the bug and are offering exchanges to those users who were affected. However, as of this time, a return e-mail address to actually contact Caley Roberts has not surfaced and any e-mail sent to SCEA only results in a response asking the sender to call their customer service, who is not informed first-hand how to help with the exchange program and suggest that the sender e-mail them instead. An issue of Official PlayStation Magazine stated that if the player's memory card is corrupted, the player can send in their copy of the game and memory card for a free copy of Jak X: Combat Racing, a new memory card, and a copy for free of a selection of Socom Navy Seals games." Well, it is very unlikely that you can send in your game now to get a replacement since it has been so long since it was released. If you really do not want to deal with it buy a greatest hits version of the game. Or follow what is said in the wikipedia article to avoid the glitch while using your copy of the game. | |||

| hmm I'm glad this was posted I couldn't never figure out why this game would randomly corrupt my memory card. The first time this happened to me I was probably around 75% through the game. Luckily I love playing this game so I was OK with replaying everything again and I started backing up my save game. | ||||

yea, so just make sure you follow the suggestion in the article to avoid corrupting your memory card. Posted Sat Nov 28, 2009 2:11 pm: I found an archived message board for jak x: combat racing at playstation.com and found some more information on this memory card glitch. Apparently this glitch is mainly a problem for slim ps2s. According to this thread at least http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=jakx&thread.id=19989& amp;view=by_date_ascending&page=1. This does make sense though, because I played this game for a year on my fat ps2 with no problems. Then since this summer on my slim ps2 I have had this glitch happen 2 or 3 times. My greatest hits copy of the game has just arrived, so hopefully the glitch will not happen any more with it. Posted Sat Nov 28, 2009 2:16 pm: Also, here is another big long thread about the problem. The guy gives a guide on what the glitch looks like and how to avoid it. http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?message.uid=24558198#U24558198 Posted Sat Nov 28, 2009 5:32 pm: If you only have the game discs, you can tell it is a greatest hits version because it will have a red bottom like this. http://s257.photobucket.com/albums/hh219/lazyhoboguy/?action=view¤t=noname-4.jpg . While the original version of the game will have a black bottom like this http://s257.photobucket.com/albums/hh219/lazyhoboguy/?action=view¤t=oldversion.jpg&newest=1 |
