Arasoi over at shmups has a great tutorial on how to use an SD card in a phat PS2 as a HDD:

That looks awesome, not to mention way more convenient for transferring games residing on a PC. I'd be very curious to see tests comparing the loading times from an SD card and an IDE HDD.

This seems like it will come in handy in the future as IDE hard drives become harder and harder to find.

I wonder how feasible it would be to mod an SD card slot into the front of the case? Being able to remove the card without pulling out the entire network adapter would be pretty nice.

There are handy SATA to IDE adapters as well. I use one of these on an old PC along with a short male-to-male ribbon:

Theoretically this setup along with a 2.5" SATA Drive or any SD/CF harddrive adapter could do the trick.
