How does one access data off an official PS2 harddrive?

Is the drive formatted with a certain file system?

Can you connect the drive to a PC and simply copy files from it?

I'm no expert but I have played around with them quite a bit. PC's wont recognize the partitions / filesystems of a PS2 hard drive. If you have a way to run Free MCboot and then uLaunchelf from your PS2 you can access the hard drive and all the folders and subfolders then copy and paste them into a FAT32 flash drive. I believe there is homebrew software out there for the PC to allow you to look at the files although I have never used it. I have only tried this with non official hard drives. I did connect a PS2 drive to my PC and it became corrupted when I tried to get the computer to read it. I would just copy the files you want to look at to a flash drive so you don't ruin your HDD.

Let me add, Windows PC's will not recognize PS2 HDD partitions / filesystems. A PC running Linux may be able to access the PS2 drive, I'll give it a try if I ever get enough free time. My Linux machine is packed away right now.
