The memory card stores your network settings, so you need it to play ANY online game. The only game that I know of that doesn't need a memory card is FFXI and Tetra Master (comes with FFXI), both use the harddrive for everything. For everything else, however, you'll need a memory card... I don't even know why you would think a memory card can be "bypassed"... how's it gonna store your login (yes, you have to log into TMB:O) info? Your network info?

I've played my ps2 online before, but I traded off my memory card. I didn't think I would need it to play a game offline. I guess I'm gonna have to go memory card hunting.

TMBO can't be played offline, in case you want to know...that's why the game looks for the network configuration at startup.

There is a way to play offline but its not that good. Set up a lan game and it allows u to put 2 or 3 bots i cant rem the exact amout. But once u set up this fake lan game ull be able to play with the bots.

Or.. play the actual TMB? TMB comes bundled with TMB:O now... $20 too.
