Once again sony proves that in order to be a 'Hip' gamer, your going to have to sacrifice part of the actual gaming in order to be 'Hip'. Why sony finds this logical is beyond me. Oh shit, that's right, money. Hehe totally forgot about that one there. Whew! Right over my head. Well, the official psTwo has been revealed. If you decide to get one just be careful you don't get it mixed up with the sunday paper and drop it in the trash. Yes...it's that thin. Lets get to some technical specs shall we?

Dimensions: Approximately 230 mm (W) x28 mm (H) x152 mm (D)
(internal volume about 23% of the current model)
Weight: Approximately 900g (weight about 45% of the current model)
Power requirements: DC 8.5V
Power consumption: Approximately 5.3A (approximately 45W)
Compatible format: PlayStation format CD-ROM
PlayStation 2 format CD-ROM
PlayStation 2 format DVD-ROM
Audio CD
DVD-Video*
DVD-RW (VR mode)

* The term "DVD-Video" is used to refer to DVD-R, DVD-RW (Video mode), DVD+R and DVD+RW discs.

Interfaces Controller Port x 2
MEMORY CARD slot x 2
USB connector x 2
NETWORK connector x 1 100BASE-TX/10BASE-T
DC IN 8.5V connector x 1
AV MULTI OUT connector x 1
DIGITAL OUT OPTICAL connector x 1
Included PlayStation 2 console x 1 (woe no shit?)
Analog Controller DUALSHOCK(R)2 x 1
AV Cable (integrated audio/video) x 1
AC Adaptor (AC power cord included) x 1
Euro-AV Connector Plug x 1 *SCPH-70003 CB, 70004 CB only

*The Vertical Stand for the current model cannot be used with the new model PlayStation 2 (SCPH-70002 CB, 700003 CB, 70004 CB), due to difference in design.

*The Multitap for the current model cannot be used with the new model PlayStation 2 (SCPH-70002 CB, 700003 CB, 70004 CB), due to difference in design. The new Multitap offers the same function as the current Multitap.

----------

And now we come to some of the more notable points. Notice the 8.5v power supply. Which means your going to have a big blocky DC connector to plug in, instead of a standard power cable. Also notice ... no room for an HDD. So it seems FFXI gamers are left out in the cold here. The only saving grace would be if they started selling a USB iteration which is what they originally sold in Japan. The final nail in the coffin, is no dialup modem port. Thus making ALL dialup compatible online games obsolete on this system for those users using a dialup ISP.

The cases design is, horrifically thin. So thin, that if in vertical mode it could tip over easily, and smash against the wall into bitty pieces. It looks really fragile and looks like there would be many situations where the device could get broken due to its notebook style design. Also what about overheating? If my memory serves me correctly. Laptops these days are still getting really freaking hot. What will keep this machine so cooled?

The system looks like it will have a TOP loading interface. Rather than a front loading interface. Which means this ultra thin console serves NO purpose to slide into thin places. Can't slip it on top of the TV in an entertainment center since the case design requires you to load it ... from the top. It would have to sit on a table, on top of your media center, or in a entertainment case of some sort. Hey lots of consoles are top loading such as Dreamcast and GameCube. However these consoles are not 28mm thick.

At the moment I can find only one reason to purchase this machine. LAN games. It's ultra thin and portable. If you were going to play some LAN games carting this thing around would be pretty easy. But even still you would need a sack containing the controller and the heavy DC power adaptor, along with a VGA adaptor or video cables, and whatever games you would need.

It has also been noted that some PS2 games will not be compatible with the new system. Sony has neglected to mention which games.

---

At the moment my Playstation 2 is now a work of technological art. Why you ask? I have a front side FireWire port for local networked i.link gameplay. I have a dual featured 56k modem and Broadband network adaptor. I also have a storage bay which allows me to install an internal harddrive. Amazing how my first generation Playstation 2, is infact the most feature packed sony console released to date.

They should be adding more features. Not taking them away. I have a hard time looking at the pstwo as being a superior alternative. In every department it is inferior to the the versions of the console we all already own. The only thing this device is good for, is a technology trophy in your home. Other than that, it is a huge step down. Especially for network gaming enthusiasts.

The system will be hitting stores November 1st worldwide. Not only this it will not be named pstwo, however named as normal, PS2.

hmm this is interesting. Do you think they will sell for $99.99 as the psones did. I agree with you nikon on sticking with the origional ps2. i have an i link origional and its the most featured ps2. I also agree on the oly reason i would thik about buying one is for LAN games.

But i thik ill just stick with mh full size hdd ps2. I actaully suprised there is no room for a hdd.. You would think its possible that it would even come with one already in it.

This would be good for someone who is just getting in to Ps2 and have no intensions of getting a hdd.,

Oops forgot to mention the system will retail for $149.99. Yea the system works well for the casual gamer just fine. For network enthusiasts like us, its a huge step down though Sad I thought sony would have added more features for us to tinker with. Unfortunatly that wasn't the case :[

I was reading an article about this on ign.com, and they said that the new PS2 does have a built in dial-up port. Here's the link:

http://ps2.ign.com/articles/549/549938p1.html?fromint=1

*the Japanese model will not feature a dial-up port (which is the model shown in the pictures), but the US version will include the dial-up port.

wtf. why would they make it so damn thin, if its top loading?

i could find it handy if it was side loading. that would make it take up no space at all.. but wtf?

Agreed. Sony should have used their money on other projects. This looks like more of a vintage item for collectors.

It's cool and all but it needs to be about 50 dollars cheaper along with all the features of the regular PS2.

Other than that... gay.

Like I've said in a couple of other places, I doubt that Sony would "alienate Square-Enix like that" by not having HDD support, meaning no FFXI support. Squenix is too big a part of the industry in North America and Japan to do that, so I hope something is done (i.e. USB intineration) to counter this.

It'd be horrrifically "DREish" and fragile if the disc tray were side-loading like the current PS2, so I'd make the same bet that it's top loading.

Yeah, there is a dial-up port indeed, and this has been confirmed in several places including IGN. That's the only real good thing I see from the PStwo right now.

Overall opinion on the PStwo so far: Neutral I'll wait and see how it turns out. I have a eerie feeling it might flop like the PSX.

It looks pretty good.

Better now that a few different places (such as EB Games) are saying that the US version has a dialup modem. I'm very glad to hear that. A USB-based HDD would solve the other main problem (lack of space for a HDD). Or maybe a laptop-type drive as was suggested above?

While a front-loading "car CD player" type optical drive would have been nice to make full use of the new thin profile, the fact that it's top-loading doesn't really bother me. I don't really mind the external power supply, either. At least it'll be quiet.

The only negative thing that really stuck in my mind was the mention of incompatibilities with some games. That, I say, is (or would be) unforgivable. This new PS2 needs to play all the games that a PSone and the "normal" PS2 can play. Even if we're only talking about five or ten incompatible titles, it really would be a step down.
