I could see this being practical as a LAN machine, as Nikon mentioned.

I'm usually dubbed by my friends as the 'PS2 kid', so my now 'bulky' PS2 is often being carted around (more evident now since I'm in a gaming club at school). The top-loading feature doesn't bug me too much. Neither does the DC connector.

The lack of a HDD space isn't terribly bothersome. I don't intend on buying one until there is compelling content designed exclusively for it (FFXI isn't my bag of chips. Sorry. Embarassed).

This little 'incompatibility' problem poses a slight risk though. If it's just five obscure (read: JP-only releases) titles, then no big deal. But if for some reason a networkable game will not function on this new model, then my chances of buying it.... are slim to none.

What would really make this new model seem like a decent value is if it was bundled with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. This remains speculation at the moment, but a new PS2 and the next iteration of the GTA series for $150 (especially if this club ever gets off the ground)? Sounds like a deal to me. Smile

The updated PSOne design made a lot of sense to me. It was significantly smaller, more like the sleek lines of the Dreamcast, and you could connect a small LCD screen to it for portable (travelling at least) gaming.

This new PS2? That's another story. I'm having difficulty envisioning how the new design is useful. Sure, it's smaller, and Sony feels compelled to shrink everything, but it's not a practical design. With the PSP on the horizon, the restyled PS2 doesn't really seem needed for portable gaming. I guess there are two things I could see use in this for:

1) Christmas gift for kiddies. Chances are little kids aren't going online anyway, so the parents will buy what the clerk recommends.

2) The "Bling" factor. Have a Hummer H2 rolling on 30 inch Daytons? Add a sleek new PS2 to pump out a little Madden over your head rest LCDs.

Personally, I'll stick with what counts, and I have all I need in my first generation PS2. Soon, I'll be seeking another old brick of a PS2 to use for iLink gaming. Armored Core anyone? Wink

GameSpot has posted a picture and some information in their "Rumor Control" column that would suggest the top-loading rumors are true. It looks like the new "slim" PS2 will be top-loading, so we won't be slipping it into any tight spots.

See the article here:

Yea it's a slight drawback for me since my current setup has my PS2 slid into a slot so I need front loading access. The ONE thing I am hoping becomes available with the advent of this new top loading slim PS2 is......non other than....easy import boot loading.

Which would be awsome, cause Metal Slug 3 is being released in a new cheaper SNK's best collection in japan for like 30 bucks. :]
(it's already out and been out for a year but the korean version costs like 50 still, and the jp version 59)

What is amazing is that I have seen websites promote it as if its a truely better remake of the original... the fact that its top loading makes its point less, Sony is dumb ... Neutral

easy import boot loading.

I said that nikon, but since Im too lazy to post my avatar noone cares about my opinion. Teh Bemani factor here is big for me, this is a huge step up for import gamers. And since I'm still only 15, i have something to play in my room with my fellow nerd friends. Horray, now I just need a boot disk and Initial D and Pop'n Music and a Ransai controller (If I havent already, I'm going to cram the fact taht I love Bemani into your heads until the day you DIE).

Well ive been keeping track of the new design and hearing rumours from other sites 2 days before it was eventually leaked to the public. Its a new ps2 design to promote sells before ps3 and for the holidays. I actually like the design i just dont like that it doesnt a include a modem port. I agree with everyone saying that the original is the better one and since i just got a new model original ps2 im kool. Unless i rob gamestop i wont be gettting the new sleek design lol Mr. Green

New Rumor, I hear Square-Enix was pissed over the hard drive issue, especially after the new ffxonline addon, so was shopping hard drive vendors for 3rd party usb harddrives and checking compatibility issues...

That was more of a fact from day-one I'm afraid. It just shows that Sony has given up on the HD all together and could care less about what their third-party developers think.

Hm... something similar to Square getting pissed at Nintendo for choosing cartdridges for the N64 instead of a disc based system? Maybe? No? It'd be nice, lol
